March 27th, 2008 - Finally! After griping and complaining about South Park not being at the top of its game this season, the show strikes back with its third episode. This week, the kids are told about all kinds of easy ways for them to get high. Though I don’t think “cheesing” is a real thing, there are plenty of other real-life disgusting ways that kids have found to get high (jenkem comes to mind). I personally have always thought that when these types of stories get out, all the scared parents, teachers, and media are *really* doing is informing the kids who aren’t doing it how they could start. Clearly, Trey and Matt have also found the irony in those news stories.

In the town of South Park, the latest rage is to have a male cat spray urine in your face to get you high. And, of course, it’s nicknamed “cheesing” because it is “fun to do,” which sounds like “fondue.” Brilliant. Also amazing were the visuals of Kenny’s fantastic boob-filled journeys while he is tripping. South Park has experimented with its animation styles before, and this ”Heavy Metal“-esque look was just as entertaining as the anime and Warcraft styles from seasons past.

But the gags didn’t stop with Kenny in Boobland. Cartman, it turns out, has a genuine soft spot for not only Mr. Kitty, but all cats. I could be wrong here, but I think in 12 years this is the first time we have actually seen Cartman truly care about a cause that doesn’t also directly benefit himself in some way. Cartman hides Mr. Kitty and other strays in his attic in a manner that is an obvious nod to the Holocaust and Anne Frank. Obvious to everyone except Cartman.

The devices used to extract the cat piss, as well as the meowing cat in a plastic baggie were also hysterical visuals. But the true capper came when Gerald Broflovski, the man who crusaded against the cats, came clean at a press conference that he himself had been addicted to cat pee. I mean, when the episode began with tales of cat urine and trips to a mystical Boobworld, was anyone expecting an Elliot Spitzer joke? I wasn’t, and I absolutely loved the gag.

This is South Park at its best - the jokes come at you fast and furious, there are random parodies, some social commentary mixed in with low-brow jokes, and above all else, the episode is just plain clever. Hopefully we see more episodes like this throughout Season 12.

Alan’s Score: 8.8 out of 10
